NEVER GIVE FOOD OR WATER TO AN INJURED BIRD OR ANIMAL THAT YOU'VE FOUND!

#1  REASON WHY YOU SHOULD NOT TRY TO FEED A BABY WILD ANIMAL OR BIRD:

ASPIRATION:  at least 85% of the baby animals that die each year at 2nd Chance, die because the person that found the animal tried to either feed the animal or give it water and they aspirated it.

Especially baby birds or other animals!!

Unless a rehabber specifically instructs you to do otherwise...

* Do NOT try to feed the animal or give it water, EVER!  This is especially important that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you try to feed a baby bird anything or try to give it water.

A large percentage of the baby birds and baby mammals that die at our facility after intake, die because the person that found the animal fed it &/or gave it water.  Although they had good intentions, because they did not know how to feed it / give it water and the person aspirated the animal causing severe respiratory complications that resulted in the animal's death.

Please note:  Birds are NOTHING like mammals whatsoever and unless you have had specific training in feeding baby wild birds and you have been instructed to do so by a certified licensed wildlife rehabilitator (NOT a veterinarian) to do otherwise, YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER try to give a baby bird food or water, EVER!

Although you may mean well by trying to make the animal more comfortable, you will most likely do the animal more harm than good if you try to feed it or give it water and this almost always results in the animals dying days later.

The opening at the back of the mouth / throat of a bird is in fact NOT the throat at all like it is for mammals, like humans and cats and dogs.  The opening in a birds mouth that would be the esophagus in a mammal is actually the trachea in a bird, meaning their windpipe.

Unlike mammals, baby birds are not capable of swallowing when they are very young either so do not assume that just because the bird takes water into its mouth voluntarily that the water or food actually went down the correct pipe, so to speak.
